Children's Health Care in Canungra

From newborns to teenagers, our team at Canungra Town Medical Centre provides general practice care for children at every stage of growing up. Whether your child needs a routine health check, their scheduled immunisations, or care for an everyday illness, our doctors are here to help, and to support you as a parent with advice and reassurance along the way.

Where a child needs specialist assessment, our GPs can arrange a referral to a paediatrician or other specialist.

Childhood Health and Development Checks

Regular health checks help make sure your child is growing and developing well, and give you a chance to raise any questions. Our doctors can provide:

  • Newborn and baby health checks
  • Growth and development monitoring, including height, weight, and developmental milestones
  • Age-appropriate health assessments as your child grows
  • Healthy Kids checks and general wellbeing reviews

If you have any concerns about your child’s development, growth, hearing, vision, speech, or behaviour, your doctor can assess and, where needed, arrange further support or referral.

Childhood Immunisations

Routine immunisations protect children against serious preventable illnesses and are provided free under the National Immunisation Program for eligible children. We offer infant, pre-schooler, and adolescent vaccines, as well as catch-up vaccinations for children who have missed scheduled doses.

Everyday Illnesses and Common Concerns

Children get sick often, and most of the time it’s nothing serious. Our doctors can assess and help manage common childhood concerns, including:

Coughs, colds, and viral infections

Sore throats and tonsillitis

Tummy upsets, vomiting, and diarrhoea

Fevers

Skin concerns such as eczema, rashes, and school sores

Ear infections

Asthma and wheezing

Concerns about growth or feeding

Your doctor will examine your child, explain what’s going on, and talk you through how to care for them at home or what further steps may be needed.

When to Seek Urgent Help

Most childhood illnesses can be managed by your GP. However, if your child is seriously unwell, for example struggling to breathe, very drowsy or difficult to wake, having a seizure, showing signs of severe dehydration, or you’re seriously worried, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department straight away. If you’re unsure and it’s outside our hours, you can also call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice.

Caring for New Parents Too

Becoming a parent comes with plenty of questions. Alongside caring for your child, our doctors can support you with newborn feeding and settling concerns, postnatal checks, and your own health and wellbeing during this time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Health and development checks happen at several stages, from newborn through the early years and into school age. Your doctor can let you know what’s recommended for your child’s age and arrange the right checks.

Bring your child’s personal health record, a list of any symptoms or questions, and any medications your child is taking.

It’s worth seeing a doctor if your child has a persistent or high fever, isn’t feeding or drinking well, seems unusually unwell or lethargic, has a rash you’re worried about, or if you’re simply not sure. Trust your instincts as a parent. For serious symptoms, seek urgent care.

Childhood vaccines are given at set ages under the National Immunisation Program. Our Immunisation Clinic page outlines what’s offered, and our team can confirm what your child is due for.

Our GPs provide children’s health care and can refer your child to a paediatrician or other specialist when specialist assessment is needed.

From routine checks to the days they're not feeling their best, we're here to care for your child.
