Women's Health Care in Canungra

Women’s health needs change throughout life, and our team at Canungra Town Medical Centre provides care across every stage, from adolescence through the reproductive years, pregnancy, and menopause and beyond. We offer general consultations, preventive screening, contraception and family planning, pregnancy care, and support for a wide range of women’s health concerns, in a confidential and respectful setting.

Screening and Preventive Health

Cervical Screening Test The Cervical Screening Test (CST) replaced the Pap smear in Australia in 2017. For most women, it’s recommended every five years from age 25. You may also be eligible to do your own sample through self-collection, which your doctor can discuss with you. Our doctors provide cervical screening in a comfortable, private setting.

Breast awareness and examination We can discuss breast awareness, perform clinical breast examination where appropriate, and arrange referrals for breast imaging such as mammograms or ultrasounds.

Well-woman checks and preventive health General health checks tailored to your age and risk factors, including blood pressure, cardiovascular and diabetes risk, bone health, and more.

Sexual Health

Confidential sexual health consultations, including sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and advice. For more detail, see our Sexual Health page.

  • The contraceptive pill and other hormonal options
  • Long-acting reversible contraception, including Implanon (contraceptive implant) insertion and removal
  • Mirena and other intrauterine device (IUD) procedures
  • Emergency contraception
  • Preconception and family planning advice

Your doctor will talk through the benefits, considerations, and suitability of each option for you.

Pregnancy Care

  • Preconception and pre-pregnancy planning
  • Confirmation of pregnancy and early pregnancy care
  • Antenatal (shared care) and postnatal care
  • Referrals to obstetric and midwifery services
  • Pregnancy-related immunisations such as whooping cough and influenza

Menstrual and Menopausal Health

  • Assessment and management of menstrual concerns such as heavy, painful, or irregular periods
  • Investigation of underlying causes
  • Menopause and perimenopause support, including discussion of symptom management options

Your doctor can help you understand what’s happening and discuss the options available to you.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Women’s health and mental health are closely connected. We provide support for concerns such as anxiety and depression, including Mental Health Treatment Plans and referrals to psychology where appropriate. If you’re struggling with disordered eating or another mental health concern, we can help connect you with the right support.

Your Comfort and Confidentiality

We understand that some women’s health appointments can feel sensitive. Your privacy and comfort matter to us. You’re welcome to request a particular doctor, ask for a chaperone to be present during examinations, and take the time you need to ask questions. For your first women’s health visit, we recommend booking a longer appointment so there’s plenty of time for a thorough consultation.
